Click image to enlarge. Cool Tropics - The Tablelands The Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands benefit from a wonderful, year round, climate due to their elevated position. The Tablelands were formed from 'block faulting' in the earth's crust about 50 million years ago, resulting in a rich fertile plateau some 600 metres above sea level. The ridge mountains form the backdrop to Port Douglas and Cairns and access is gained to the Tablelands by four main routes. The winding roads have many 'lookout stops' and the spectacular 'waterfall circuit' takes in Millaa Millaa Falls and Millstream Falls. The Tablelands is pitted with volcanic craters which, over time, have become beautiful lakes. Lakes Barrine, Eacham, and Euramoo are set amid lush vegetation and provide a wonderful habitat for many of Australia's rare animals, birds and insects, such as the platypus, tree kangaroos, bower birds and green possums. Tourists can enjoy swimming, canoeing, sailing and fishing. Visit the town of Yungaburra to see its collection of 28 Heritage Listed historical buildings and stop for refreshments at one of its delightful cafés or hotels. |
